Bratislava / Katowice, 7th December, 2018 - Vladimír Tóth, Vice President of the Supreme Audit Office of the Slovak Republic, participated in a panel discussion on "Air Quality in Europe and Poland - Challenges, Opportunities and Threats" in Katowice where he presented the results of air pollution audit in Slovakia. The event was organized by the SAI of Poland (NIK) in cooperation with the UN Global Compact as part of the UN Conference on Climate Change COP24 (Conference of the Parties).
The panel discussion was led by Piotr Miklis, the director of the NKI Katowice regional branch. The panel was attended by Krzysztof Kwiatkowski (President of NIK), Janusz Wojciechowski, (ECA Member for Poland), Vladimir Tóth (SAO SR Vice President), Witold Kozłowski (President of the Malopolska Autonomous Region), Kamil Wyszkowski (UN Global Compact) and Andrzej Guła (Chairman of the Krakow Smog Warning System). The discussion was also attended by representatives from the professional public prof. Aleksander Sobolewski (Institute for Chemical Processing of Coal) and Physician Prof. Tomasz Lekston, who conducted the first poll on the impact of smog on health in Poland. The World Health Organization considers air pollution to be the most serious environmental threat to health in the modern world. Worldwide, more than 6.5 million people will die of air pollution prematurely, this number in Poland is estimated to be around 50 000 a year.
Almost a hundred representatives of local government, mayors, but also doctors, students, journalists and activists have shown their interest in engaging in fight for clean air. The participants in the event spoke about the challenges, opportunities and threats associated with the fight against smog.
