Bratislava, December 30, 2021 - Slovakia is not ready to deal with the drought enough to eliminate threats to the environment and society. There is no system of indicators to monitor the situation and a comprehensive solution in a broad strategy. On performance audit in years 2018 to 2020, the Supreme Audit Office of the Slovak Republic found, that the drought management itself is not coordinated by a body with a strong mandate from the government. There is thus a risk that the state will not meet all the goals within the framework of the Global Agenda 2030, the program of sustainable development of society.

"Based on a performance audit, we concluded that it was necessary to change the approach from crisis management of the consequences of drought to active management of the causes of drought. Slovak institutions are also encouraged to take such an approach, and at least on the part of the environment sector, a positive turnaround can be seen today. However, based on international experience, it is important to strengthen the competencies of the ministry of environment as a key player in addressing the challenges posed by the drought, and the Minister must have the strong support of the government and the Prime Minister himself,” said Vice-president of the Slovak auditors Ľubomír Andrassy.
